Scripture: 1 Samuel 1:27–28 (NKJV)
“For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition which I asked of Him. Therefore I also have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives he shall be lent to the Lord.”
🌿 Story Behind the Hymn
“I Surrender All” was written in 1896 by Judson W. Van DeVenter — a man standing at a crossroads between passion and purpose. He was a gifted artist and teacher who had built a comfortable life. Yet deep inside, he felt God tugging him toward ministry.
That inner tension lasted for years. He knew what he wanted to do — but he also knew what God was calling him to become. Eventually, Van DeVenter reached the breaking point where striving met surrender.
One night, he laid it all before God. Out of that moment came the words that would echo through generations:
“All to Jesus I surrender, all to Him I freely give; I will ever love and trust Him, in His presence daily live.”
Those weren’t just lyrics — they were his testimony. He didn’t write about surrender from the comfort of success, but from the battlefield of obedience. His peace came when his plans bowed to God’s purpose.
☕ Reflection
Hannah’s story in 1 Samuel 1 is a living picture of surrender. She prayed through years of disappointment and tears, misunderstood even by those around her. She wasn’t asking for fame or comfort — she just longed for a child.
When God answered, she didn’t cling to the blessing. She gave it back.
That’s the kind of faith that shakes heaven — not loud, not showy, but deeply obedient. Hannah’s surrender wasn’t about loss; it was about love. She trusted the Giver more than the gift.
Surrender doesn’t always come easy. It’s the prayer you whisper through tears. It’s the moment you realize that peace isn’t found in control — it’s found in release. It’s when you stop asking, “What if?” and start saying, “Even if.”
Like Hannah, we find our greatest strength in the moment we let go. Like Van DeVenter, we discover freedom when we finally say, ‘All to Thee, my blessed Savior — I surrender all.’
Sometimes God doesn’t change the circumstance right away — He changes us through it. And when that surrender happens, what once felt like sorrow begins to sound like a song.
🙏 Prayer for the Week
Lord, help me release what I’ve been gripping too tightly.
Teach me to trust You more than the answer itself.
Remind me that surrender isn’t weakness — it’s worship.
Give me peace to let go of what was never mine to hold.
And when I open my hands, fill them again — not with what I want, but with what You will.
Amen.
✨ Closing Reflection
So as this new week begins, pause and ask yourself:
What do you need to surrender this Sunday?
Maybe it’s control over a situation you can’t fix.
Maybe it’s the timeline you keep trying to rush.
Maybe it’s the fear that keeps whispering ‘what if.’
Whatever it is — let it go. Lay it down. The same God who heard Hannah’s cry and guided Van DeVenter’s surrender hears yours too.
Start the week lighter, freer, and at peace — fully surrendered, fully His.
