Sunday Songs: Build My Life

Reflection

Some people think that because something is true, it’s always okay to say it. But truth without love can wound. Build My Life points us to something deeper — building every part of life, including our words, on the foundation of Christ’s love.

2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us that God gave us not fear, but power, love, and a sound mind. That means our words must be more than true — they should be powerful enough to encourage, loving enough to heal, and wise enough to know when silence speaks better.

When we build our lives on Christ, our words stop being careless bricks tossed around. They become building blocks — shaping homes of peace, hearts of grace, and lives that glorify God.

Song History

Build My Life was written in 2016 by Pat Barrett, Matt Redman, Brett Younker, Karl Martin, and Kirby Kaple, and first recorded by the worship collective Housefires. Pat Barrett later released it on his solo album in 2018, and it quickly became one of the most-sung worship songs across churches worldwide.

The heart of the song comes from Jesus’ words in Matthew 7: building on the rock instead of sand. It reminds us that when storms come, only a life built on Christ’s love will stand — and that foundation shapes the way we live, speak, and love.
